Holey-Moley Core Digger
The Holey-Moley Core Digger is a post hole digging tool that uses a Shop-Vacuum assist. The tool operates with a standard shop vacuum. As a result this digger works well in hardpan and hard packed clay soils. In addition, it works well in both dry and wet conditions. Finally, this digger works well in most uniform soils. A consequence of soils having some binding characteristics, it can be held in the core cylinder with the vacuum. In many cases, the plug can be pulled out of the hole without the vacuum. To expel the plug, reverse the vacuum to blower.
The Holey-Moley Core Digger will easily cut through large tree roots and is a perfect companion for the 6-Inch Post Hole Digger. Because of the its unique design, the Holey-Moley Core Digger easily bores precision holes holes 4.5 feet deep. Post Hole Digger Vacuum Tube Extensions are available in 14″, 28″, 36″ and 48″ lengths for deeper holes. Due to the digger being shop vacuum assisted, the Post Hole Core Digger can rapidly dig deep, straight, uniform holes at a rate of 2 to 15 inches a minute depending on the soil type. In addition, It is available in 4″, 5″, and 6″ diameters.
Caution: This digger will cut through electrical conduit, metal water pipes, PVC pipes, and communication cables. Call 811 in your state first before digging.
Holey-Moley Core Digger Method of Operation
The Holey-Moley Core Digger digs a narrow annulus around a center plug. The vacuum pulls nearly 80 pounds of downward force onto the cutter head for easy ground penetration. At cut depths of 12″ the plug becomes sealed in the digger head with the vacuum and then can be lifted out of the hole. The vacuum hose is then switch to the blower side of the shop vacuum to expel the plug. Due to the power of the vacuum, just turning it off is usually enough for the soil to just fall out.
As a result of the shop vacuum assist, digger operation requires only an easy back-and-forth rotational movement of 60 to 75 degrees, by hand, to loosen the soil. Finally, with the shop vacuum doing the hard work, the Core Digger is fun to use. And best of all, after digging, the Shop Vacuum will easily clean up the bottom of the hole and surrounding area of loose dirt.

The Holey-Moley Core Digger Assembly includes three parts, handle assembly, upper vacuum tube and a Core Digger Quick Change Head. The photo below shows three Quick Change Head sizes, 4″, 5″ and 6″. All you need is one complete Digger Assembly and then you can use from any of the many Quick Change Heads to increase your digging options.
The Post Hole Core Digger Head consists of heavy gage metal pipe with a replaceable hardened metal blade. The photo above shows the standard handle assembly along with a standard extension tube. Core Digger heads are standard 12″ long for easier lifting as compared to the 36″ tube shown in the photo. The easily assembled parts together with a standard shop vacuum becomes a robust, simple to use, hole-boring machine. When finished the digger will look like the fully assembled digger. You will need a Shop Vacuum described in our section on Selecting a Shop Vacuum. In addition, we also have a blog on Digging Holes With A Shop Vac.
If you need a larger diameter hole, consider purchasing our 8″ EZ Reamer or our 10″ and 12″ Large Diameter Reamer. As a result of good design, the outside diameter of the reamers are ideal for concrete tubes.
Another noteworthy option for digging holes in remote locations is our Portable Engine Driven Shop Vacuum System. The Portable Engine Driven Shop Vacuum System works exceptionally well with the Post Hole Core Digger. Because it is manufactured by Keene Engineering for dry washers and gold processing equipment, you can expect a high quality system.
